Fairview Avenue Bridge Foundation Design

Client: SDOT \ HDR Engineering

Location:
Seattle, WA

Contact for geotechnical projects: John Peterson

Project Background & Challenges

Two relatively old parallel bridges owned by SDOT and located on South Lake Union needed upgrading to support future traffic loads. The west bridge was a timber trestle bridge that was at the end of its design life and needed to be replaced entirely while the 45 year-old east bridge needed to be upgraded.

Solution

Aspect performed a comprehensive subsurface exploration program and developed a conceptual geologic model of the site to support the foundation design for the new west bridge and its abutments and the foundation improvements to the east bridge. Our design recommendation included a variety of pile option, including driven and drilled piles. Collaboration between Aspect and the design team allowed for seamless evolution of the design concepts, and efficient follow-through for final design.
