High School Class Learns About Water Rights at Aspect

Aspect’s Owen Reese hosted a group of 13 high school students and instructors from Explorations Academy in a discussion about water rights issues in the Pacific Northwest.

Owen provided an overview of water rights and how they are managed in Washington. Using his work on the Lake Tapps Water Rights and Supply project as an example, he described the scientific, regulatory, and political challenges involved in obtaining new water rights.

As part of their water “cluster” curriculum, the class chose the field outing to Aspect to help them understand the specific water resource challenges that surround local watersheds.

Abram Dickerson, Exploration instructor, emphasized that understanding water rights is key to shaping the roles students will take to manage or protect the environment. “We make a conscious effort to focus our curriculum on important issues that our students will negotiate in their generation,” Dickerson said.
