Project Background & Challenges
Because of many recent water-resource policy changes, developing
environmentally responsible gravel mines is challenging — particularly
in growing suburban areas where gravel is needed most. The design and
permitting processes must address how to protect water resources, secure
rights for water usage, and mitigate impacts via engineered stormwater
systems. They must also incorporate appropriate monitoring programs, because
mines typically occur in areas where aquifers receive recharge, provide
drinking water supplies, and feed stream baseflow.
Solution
Aspect works hard to provide feasible, cost-effective solutions
that are consistent with the mining business needs. We have developed
strategies to not only address these problems but also to enhance fisheries.
In addition to characterizing water resources, our solutions involve designing
grading and drainage systems, water quality treatment systems, infiltration
facilities, and performance-based monitoring programs. Currently, we are
providing support for EIS processes, grading permits, NPDES, and water-rights
permitting at several mining sites.
